The Black Pearl - Ship Layout

Information

I used the design of the Pearl as uploaded to ign here, and basically took from it everything that matters - that is, the outside of the ship. The guts of the ship weren't included in the designs, so I had to take some liberties. However, the Pearl remains the intellectual property of its creators - we're just borrowing it and using it for the game

Ready? Here we go.

Deck Line
This is a simple plan of the top deck, as presented in the original designs Working from bow to stern (front to back for us landlubbers), we first come to the the quarterdeck, beneath which are Captain Jack's quarters. On the quarterdeck is a small window to let light into the captain's Quarters from above, the chimney of the galley stove, the mizzenmast, and the wheel - which is pretty important if you want to know where you're going.

Coming onto the main deck down the stairs (between these are the doors into the captain's quarters), we see the capstan, which is used for hauling and securing sails and rigging, and the mainmast (the Pearl's design has the mainmast coming out of the centre of the capstan) Past this are two sets of ladders leading into the cargo hold, and between them a grill that can be removed, which is used to lifting in larger cargoes like barrels.

The Pearl's first battery of canons are also on the main deck. There are ten in total on this deck, and another ten sweeps below, and these are particularly handy should the ship need to broadside with another ship.

Down the stairs onto the lower deck, we find the foremast, and another smaller opening into the cargo hold for storage. At either side at the port (left) and starboard (right) anchors, and the prow of the ship.

Gun Deck
There are ten more canons on this deck, and it also serves as the ship's auxilliary cargo hold and galley. The main cargo hold is in the belly of the ship, which is not pictured, but accessible via the ladders. The masts and steering gear are also visible extending downwards into the belly of the ship.

Crew Quarters
Crew quarters are two-by-two metres, but at least you have it to yourself. The bed is pushed up against the far wall of the ship, and there is enough space over for a trunk for your meagre posessions, and a little bit of space to walk around in. Odd-numbered rooms are to port, even-numbers are to starboard. There are small social areas at the bow and stern of the ship, if you don't find the galley to your liking. Either of these can be used as a sick bay if needed.

Obviously, you may have requests for canon items (eg. Luke Skywalker's Lightsaber), but you can also request small, non-canon items (eg. A novel, coloured pencils).

Please let us know the importance of these items to your character. This will help us determine how best to drop them into the game. Please remember that there will be fewer opportunities to get the more important items, and they will be harder to get hold of.

aka Rules.

The role of the Mods
The Mods will be around to ensure fair play through the game, and generally create a fun and involving environment for the characters to play in. To that end, we will be trying to give as many opportunities as possible for the characters to interact, and aim the keep the RP light-hearted fun for everyone. However, we will pop up every now and again to ~~nag~~ remind you about tagging and such like.

There will be mod lists and contact info for you on the main page, and if for any reason we are unavailable to you, there is a mod contact post that we will keep an eye on. Please don't be reluctant to come to us: we're here to make this game work and ensure people get as much enjoyment our of it as possible. In return, we ask that you read and follow the rules, and keep in touch!

Godmoding
For those of you who are seasoned RP-ers, this shouldn’t need to be said, but it bears repeating here and now.

In short: godmoding is when you ascribe attributes to your character that have not been agreed upon, or when you control another person’s character without their permission. Do not write as another’s character, and do not try to control them. Always ask permission before you do something to another character, or at least give them an opening to react.

IC/OOC
Please try to keep in character! If you have a disagreement with another player, do not take it out through your characters. Conversely, do not change your character just to fulfil a pairing. If this were an AU RP you’d have a little leeway – but your character is being pulled from their world into Disney’s. Their personalities and pasts are as canonically stated. Although this leaves room for character devlopment, in picking up a character you’re agreeing to play them as they are, rather than pluck another personality from somewhere else!

Manners
Another one that shouldn't have to be mentioned - you probably see this in every other livejournal community anyway, but we ask for good manners OOC. Obviously we can't quite ask for this IC as well, as it may be that it's not in your character's nature to be polite. Conversely, please don't take IC insults personally. If there is a problem with OOC rudeness, please let a mod know and we'll discuss the problem with the parties involved.

Spelling and Grammar
Spelling and grammar mistakes are perfectly understandable, but please take some care in your writing. Make use of the return button to space out your paragraphs, and please, no text speak.

Sex, blood and violence
It’s all fair game – you’re sailing with pirates, after all! However, please remember to keep NC17 posts friendslocked and post up warnings. And remember – there are still consequences! They just might not come when you’d expect them!

Group Plots
Please contact a mod to give an OK on big group plots (5 characters or more) through the plot/events suggestions page... and please don't mutiny on your captains! The main reason for this is just so that we know what's going on.

Character Limit
At the moment, the character limit is two (2) characters per player. This will change depending on activity and length of time spent in the RP, and we ask that you do not play more than two characters from the same fandom.

Reservations
Character reservations can be found here. They will be held for a week, and an extension will be given on the first request, no questions asked. However, a reason will be required for a second extension. A third extension will not be granted.

Applications for characters reserved by others will be denied.

Applications
We ask that you make an effort with your application. It doesn’t need to be an essay, but please respect the minimum counts we have listed, and use your own words. A copy-paste from Wikipedia or similar will be met with an immediate denial. We'd also like to hear you sing 'A Pirate's Life for Me', or at least part of it, somewhere in your application, but please not in the subject line!

We will not be accepting Original Characters or celebrities.

Activity
Please be active! Activity checks will be carried out once a month, once the community is stable – at this point, we’re looking to have the first activity check two months into play, but it depends on how well things take off. The character limit will likely be extended after the second activity check, but this also depends on how numbers go for the RP.

Plot

The world of Hoist the Colours is based loosely on that of Pirates of the Caribbean. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to bring your character from their own world into Disney's. Well. Tia Dalma's going to do most of the work for you - the rest is all down to how you play it.

Gameplay:

So how exactly are we going to work this? We'll be using the Pirates of the Caribbean world, but only aspects of the plot. These aspects, and characters, will be introduced as play progresses and numbers increase. Each of the Pirates characters will be in charge of a ship and a crew - minimum of ten, maximum of thirty (also subject to increase). Once we have two ships, crews will be chosen by lot - and there will be events every month or so in which the crews will be redrawn.

Posting:
Characters will make posts to the ship's record, which can be found in the main community (colours_rp). Each of the ships have a charmed record book given to them by Tia Dalma, and are linked together - so any entry is visible by any character, regardless of which ship they are on (for example, Jack Sparrow writing in the Black Pearl's log can read and comment on an entry written by Will Turner on the Flying Dutchman.) However, despite the books being charmed and interesting, characters will still be writing in pen and ink, and entries cannot be filtered, encrypted, or hacked. So be mindful of what you write down~!

Action logs will be posted to the log community (colours_logs), and it's fine to copy and paste AIM logs if you use them. However, please make sure you follow the posting blueprint, which will be available here.

Events:

There will be several types of events - in addition to the pirates' standard treasure hunts and poor weather conditions, Tia Dalma will throw the occasional bit of magic your way. Ships will pull into Tortuga every month or two to resupply, and these will coincide with the activity checks and crew reshuffles. If numbers grow enough, positions for new captains will be open at this time.

Captains:

Sadly, captains cannot be applied for in the same way as normal characters. There will be a degree of responsibility involved with playing a captain, and ideally we would be looking for active, experienced players to play them. The captains will aid in the smooth-running of the game, and in some cases, be responsible for mini-events aboard their own ships. They would essentially become part of the moderation team, and will be required to submit two applications - one for a position as a mod, and a second character application for their chosen captain. These will be available for players to vote on. More information about this will be available as gameplay progresses.

Items:

Tia Dalma will leave your character a set of suitably piratey clothing, a small bag of twenty dubloons, and a cutlass. They may carry either three large or seven small grenades when off-ship, and these will come from the ship’s stores. Characters may buy a second weapon, but they may not carry any more than these two.

You may sell items - weapons will sell for higher prices than clothes, but please remember that you may be at a disadvantage if you only have grenades as an armament. Make your choices carefully!

Remember, while you're out pirating there may be opportunities for you to regain some of your trinkets from your old life... if you feel like forfeiting your share of the plunder, that is. If there's anything you're after in particular, drop a comment here, and we'll see what we can do~!
